Karl's eyes fluttered open. It was dark outside. After several rounds of passion they had finally collapsed, exhausted and sated. Karl looked over at the clock. It was getting late. He'd have to be going soon. For the time being he would just let Anita sleep.

Anita awoke to Karl kissing her forehead. She stretched and moaned. "What time is it?"

"A bit after one."

"How long before you have to go?"

"Not long. I have a 6:15 flight and I still have to get back to my hotel and pack." He felt Anita's muscles tense so she could sit up. "But for right now I just want to lay here with you for a little while." Anita relaxed and snuggled into his side.

Anita was enjoying just lying in Karl's arms. "I'm really glad you came looking for me."

Karl kissed the top of her head. "Me, too. I just wish I wasn't leaving so soon. I'm on press tour for a little while longer, then I have to get back home. Nat and Hunter..." He felt Anita flinch when he mentioned Natalie. "Nat and I got back together a while after you came home. I didn't think I'd ever see you again..."

She tried to sound nonchalant. "It's okay. I understand."

"We have a little boy now. He's two."

"That's great." He could hear the disappointment in her voice.

"Ani..." He lifted her face to him. "I really didn't think I'd ever see you again. You have to believe me."

"I know. It's just...if I'd known you were back with her I wouldn't have..."

"I'm sorry. It didn't even cross my mind. I swear. Since the second I saw you this afternoon, you're the only thing I could think about."

"Really, Karl. I understand. You don't have to explain. It's not like I expected you to pine over me forever. I just meant that if I had known that you were with someone, I wouldn't have gone to bed with you. I'm not like that."

"We've been having quite a rough time lately. We barely speak and we see each other even less. If we were happy I wouldn't have gone to bed with you either."

Anita sighed and sat up, rubbing her hand over her face. "How could I let this happen?" she said more to herself than out loud. "Not only do you have a girlfriend, but a kid!" She groaned.

Karl sat up and put his arm around her. "I really am sorry, Ani." He pulled her to him and kissed the top of her head. "I didn't mean for you to feel like that." He sighed, frustrated with himself for not thinking.

Anita pulled herself together for the moment. "If you want to get a shower in before you leave, the bathroom is right across the hall. There are towels in there. I'll go make some coffee." With that, she slipped her robe on and left the room. Karl sighed heavily and decided a shower was a good idea.
